The Olfactory System

The Olfactory System

This system provides us with much pleasure, for it is responsible for detecting scents – both wonderful and not so wonderful. But it is very delicate.

Too much scent in a short space of time or not enough variety will cause it to become saturated, resulting in a temporary inability to detect all or some fragrances. This is known as ‘olfactory fatigue’.

To avoid the disappointment of not being able to detect our favourite fragrance, we need to introduce different scents around our home. Our olfactory system will not tire as quickly and we can create different scent prints for each space.

Contrary to popular belief, fragrances will not ‘clash’ when different scents are used in one room, just as fragrances do not clash when two or more people in a room are wearing different perfumes. We simply detect different notes as the air currents move throughout our room.
